El Distrito Federal registra en los anales de su historia un hecho hoy casi olvidado por sus habitantes y poco estudiado por los historiadores: la creación del Departamento del Distrito Federal en 1929, a raíz de la supresión de sus municipios. Creado como una dependencia del poder Ejecutivo Federal, el departamento del Distrito federal dirigió la urbanización de la ciudad de México y suplió al gobierno local electo hasta 1997, año en que los capitalinos votaron por vez primera en su historia para elegir al jefe de gobierno del Distrito Federal. En este libro se explican las razones que en aquel momento llevaron a la creación del otrora Departamento del Distrito Federal a partir del análisis de los problemas urbanos de la ciudad de México, de los problemas institucionales de las administraciones municipales y del diagnóstico que especialistas y autoridades realizaron de la urbanización del Distrito Federal y de la gestión municipal. El examen histórico que aquí se presenta resulta sin duda útil y necesario para comprender la realidad política y urbana actual de la capital de la República Mexicana.

The Federal District registers in the annals of its history a fact that is nearly forgotten today by its inhabitants and that is rarely studied by historians: the creation of the Department of the Federal District in 1929, whose roots lay in the elimination of its municipalities. Created as a dependency of the Federal Executive branch, the Department of the Federal District directed the urbanization of Mexico City and took the place of the elected local government until 1997, the year in which inhabitants of the capital voted for the first time in its history to elect the Head of the Federal District government. This book explains the reasons that led to the creation of the former Department of the Federal District, through an analysis of the institutional problems of the municipal administrations and the diagnosis that specialists and the authorities carried out of Federal District urbanization and municipal management. The historical examination that is presented herein is useful and necessary to an understanding of the urban and political reality of the capital of the Mexican Republic.
