Éste es el noveno ciclo de la serie El Historiador frente a la Historia que se llevó a cabo en la primavera de 1998 y estuvo dedicado a analizar desde diferentes perspectivas las complejas y profundas relaciones que se dan entre la historia y la literatura. Uno de los temas que ocupa un lugar destacado en varios trabajos es la novela histórica, dado el interés que reviste para ambas especialidades y porque varios de los autores participantes han incursionado exitosa¬mente en ese campo, lo que les permite no sólo cuestionar qué es lo que hace histórica a una novela sino revisar cómo se da en ella, o debe darse, la relación entre historia y ficción. Otro tema que hace acto de presencia de manera recurrente en varios de los textos es el de la recepción de la obra histórica, que remite a la necesidad ineludible que tienen los historiadores de acercarse a la literatura para contar bien su relato.

This book is the result of the ninth series of conferences El Historiador frente a la Historia, hold in the spring of 1998, in which were analysed from different perspectives the complex and profound relations between history and literature. The main subject of many of the works here presented is the historical novel. This was due not only to the fact that both areas history and literature are interested in it, but also to the fact that several of the participating authors have successfully made an incursion in this literary subgenre. Such incursions have permitted them not only to question what makes a novel historical, but also to examine how is, or should be, the relation between history and fiction in the novel. Another recurrent subject in many of the texts is the reception of the historical work, which reminds us of the inescapable necessity for the historians to get closer to literature in order to know how to tell their stories.
