La ciudad de México, desde los primeros tiempos en que los europeos la otearon en lo alto del valle rodeada de las aguas del lago de Texcoco hasta su incierto y desecado presente megalopolitano, ha desconcertado a propios y extraños, al igual que a quienes intentan estudiarla e historiarla, una empresa que por su enormidad y complejidad —tanto como la propia ciudad— requiere cada vez más la investigación inter y transdisciplinar. Los estudios aquí reunidos proponen ocho vías para comprender a esta metrópoli “cruel e imprescindible” (como diría Efraín Huerta, el mayor de sus poetas), recurriendo a los temas, problemas y métodos con que actualmente los historiadores piensan e interpretan la ciudad y lo urbano.
                                                  

Mexico City, from the first time Europeans watched it surrounded by the Lake Texcoco waters from the top of the valley until its uncertain and dry megalopolitan present, has unsettled Mexicans as well as foreign people. It has also unsettled those who have attempted to study it and write the history of it, a task which, because of its magnitude and complexity—which equals the magnitude and complexity of the city itself—, requires more and more inter- and transdisciplinary researches. The studies here compiled propose eight ways to comprehend this “cruel e imprescindible” metropolis—as Efraín Huerta, its greatest poet, described it—, recurring to the themes, problems, and methods with which at present historians think of and understand the city and the urban.
